The Town of Portville was first settled in 1805 as a result of the flourishing timber industry, which to a lesser degree continues today.  For more early history, visit the Portville Historical & Preservation Society​ and the Portville Free Library.


Demographics

Approximately 4200 people live in the Town of Portville.  There are roughly 1900 residential properties and 150 businesses.  Fore more information about Portville, visit the US Census Bureau.

Communities within Portville

The Town of Portville is 36 square miles.  Generally speaking, businesses and residences throughout the Town have their own water and sewer systems.  Police services for the Town are provided by the Portville Police Department, the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department and the State Police.   Fire services are provided by the Kinney Hose Fire Department (P.O. Box 601, Westons Mills) with mutual aid being provided by adjacent towns.  The Village of Portville of 1000 people has its own water and sewer systems, maintains its own roads, and has its own police department.  The Village of Portville is its own municipal corporation with its own village taxes in addition to the town and county taxes and town administrative services. Village Police services are provided by the Portville Police Department.  Fires services are provided by the Portville Fire Department (PO Box 781, Portville) There are four postal zip codes within the Town of Portville: 14770, which includes around half of the area of the Town and all of the Village; 14788 Westons Mills; 14760 Olean postal distribution only; and 14727 Cuba postal distribution only.

Schools within Portville

Portville Central School provides Pre-K - 12 education to approximately 950 students.  Jamestown Community College is in the City of Olean, 7 miles away.  St. Bonaventure University is located in the Town of Allegany, 12 miles away.
